Hello fellow Junior Rangers! Today I am working on getting the Clara Barton Civil War 150th Anniversary Junior Ranger badge, a specialty badge being offered in five parks in commemoration of the 150th Anniversary of the Civil War. It is a fun way to learn more about Clara Barton and her many Civil War accomplishments. She is probably America’s most famous nurse—who was never a real nurse!  (Clara Barton never had any formal training as a nurse).

To get this specialty badge, you have to send a form called the “Traveling Clara Barton” to five different NPS sites to get stamped (or you can visit the sites as well to get the stamps in person). Once you get all five stamps, you return Traveling Clara Barton along with a completed NPS activity sheet to Clara Barton NHS and they will in turn send you the Clara Barton Civil War 150th Anniversary Junior Ranger badge.

So, yeah. I am getting my Traveling Clara Barton ready. I made sure to write my return address directly on my Traveling Clara Barton, and even included a return address label for them to use if they want.

To expedite the process, I’ve decided to make six copies of the Traveling Clara Barton document to mail out. I will send five copies to the five different area sites. When I get them all back, I will cut out the rectangles and paste them onto the sixth, which is the original, “master” Traveling Clara Barton. That’s the one I will send to Clara Barton NHS along with my already completed NPS activity sheet to get the final stamp and get the badge.

We’ll see how long it takes to get this badge… When you’re depending on six different sites to get back to you, it can be a little tricky. :)

Explore on, Junior Rangers! :)

Want to get one too? Here’s how you get the Clara Barton Civil War 150th Anniversary Junior Ranger Badge:

  1. Print out the Traveling Clara Barton document from NPS.gov
  2. Get your Traveling Clara Barton stamped by  visiting or mailing your document to the six sites associated with the badge.
  3. Print out and complete the Junior Ranger worksheet associated with Traveling Clara Barton.
  4. Return your completed Traveling Clara Barton and Junior Ranger worksheet to Clara Barton NHS by either visiting in person or mailing it in.

  5. Do all of those things and you too will get a Clara Barton Civil War 150th Anniversary Junior Ranger Badge, yay! :)
